FranciscoAbout the TeamOpenAI's Human Data Team creates custom data
solutions driving groundbreaking research. Our work enhances and
evaluates our flagship models and products like ChatGPT, GPT-4o,
and Sora and contributes to safety initiatives through
collaboration with our Preparedness and Safety Systems teams.We
work with AI trainers to gather specialized data for training and
evaluating our models across modalities such as video, audio, text,
and tool actions. Our goal is to develop scalable methods and tools
and platforms to generate and evaluate high quality data from both
synthetic sources and human experts in various fields, including
mathematics, sciences, creative writing, programming, art, and
safety. We leverage OpenAI models to improve and streamline our
data collection and quality processes.We're looking for a tech lead
manager to build teams in a deeply iterative, collaborative,
fast-paced environment to bring our technology to millions of users
around the world, and ensure it's delivered with safety and
reliability in mind.About the RoleIn this role you might:
- Directly manage ICs / TLs on Human Data, a core part of the
Research organization. You will collaborate with product managers,
researchers, and the rest of our engineering team to create new
data and tooling around emerging research capabilities and unsolved
customer needs.
- Build and grow high performing teams in a deeply iterative,
collaborative, fast-paced environment to bring our technology to
millions of users around the world, and ensure it's delivered with
safety and reliability in mind.
- Be responsible for the team that will architect, build, and
design our tooling, infra, products, and evals that power our data
collection and management platform, including collecting important
training signals from products like ChatGPT, Dall-E, Sora, along
with the key interfaces used by our AI human labelers.
- Iterate rapidly to improve user and developer experience both
for our internal team as well as partner research teams while
advancing scalability, performance, observability, and
security.
- Understand training and eval data needs from across all of
OpenAI and research opportunities to improve our platform, and help
develop our technical roadmap and prioritization.
- Help drive the high leverage projects for our team and ensure
our team engagement is high and team, technical, and organizational
blockers are resolved and milestones are delivered.
- Ensure that our overall data collection platform is secure,
scalable, highly available, and maximally useful.This role is based
in San Francisco, CA.We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the
office per week and offer relocation assistance to new
employees.You might thrive in this role if you:
- Hold a Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. or other degree in computer
science, AI, machine learning, or a related field.
- Have experience being a hands-on individual contributor, while
simultaneously managing a high performing team.
- Are comfortable rolling up your sleeves to write code and be a
major contributor to a project.
- Have experience hiring, coaching, and inspiring senior
engineers or other TLs.
- Are willing to both own important problems end-to-end, but also
have good delegation skills and are willing to pick up whatever
knowledge you're missing to get the job done.
- Are strongly motivated by OpenAI's mission of building safe,
universally beneficial AGI and are aligned with OpenAI's

- Stay goal-oriented instead of method-oriented, and are not
